There are many organizations that support this community, and some are highlighted in this month’s list of featured nonprofit organizations below. Featured Nonprofits for Disability Awareness Month:
Special Olympics
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.
Buddy Cruise
The Buddy Cruise’s mission is to provide educational opportunities and resources for families while promoting awareness, advocacy, and inclusion for individuals with special needs through unique venues.
Reece’s Rainbow
Reece’s Rainbow is an advocacy and adoption grant foundation serving foreign-born orphans with Down syndrome and other special needs. We raise funds as adoption grants, and we seek adoptive families for those children. We assist committed families in further fundraising to minimize the out-of-pocket expenses needed to bring them home. Children born with disabilities are abandoned at a very high rate abroad. There is no place in society for these children, no resources for bio families, no education, medical care, or a future. Over 2000 children are “orphans no more” due to our advocacy and fundraising programs. We seek donors year-round to minimize and/or eliminate the upfront cost of bringing these children out of orphanages and into loving forever families.
Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs
Established for the charitable purpose of:
- Rescuing, raising, and training the highest caliber medical service/assistance dogs
- Pairing highly trained dogs with individuals afflicted by disabilities, including a focus on veterans with combat wounds
- Building/restoring independence and improving quality of life, for both the recipient and the dog, while minimizing reliance on government, communities, caregivers, and families
- Advancing successful service dog training practices by promoting appropriate trainer education and contributing to related research studies
- Pursuing increased public awareness and education regarding current disability laws and contributing to new/enhanced laws regarding service dogs
A Touch of Understanding
A Touch of Understanding’s mission is to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals. Our educational programs are designed to increase understanding of differences and promote full inclusion, thereby minimizing discrimination, bullying and social isolation suffered by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially those with disabilities.
On the Move Community Integration
On the Move Community Integration was created to:
- Assist adults with developmental disabilities in accessing meaningful, healthful, and environmentally responsible activities in our community.
- Enrich the social fabric of our community through fuller participation of individuals with differences.
- Increase appreciation for human differences through modeling the celebration of diversity.
Hope Services
Hope’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities and mental health needs.

Miss Amazing provides opportunities for girls and women with disabilities to consider their goals, step outside of their comfort zones, and build networks of support.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America’s mission is to create opportunities for success for all individuals affected by learning disabilities and to reduce the incidence of learning disabilities in future generations.
